University of Baguio Hosts 3rd Regional Student Research Colloquium

“Meaningful Collaboration through Research”

Baguio City, Philippines — The University of Baguio (UB) successfully hosted the 3rd Regional Student Research Colloquium on Oct 15 2025 in partnership with Baguio Central University (BCU). The event brought together student researchers from various higher education institutions across the Cordilleran region to present innovative studies and foster academic collaboration.

The event began with a warm welcome from the President of the University of Baguio, Dr. Javier Herminio D. Bautista. With words of encouragement in taking the risk and achieve great heights in making research. Plenary Speakers Dr. Mark Preston S. Lopez and Dr. Janet Lynn M. Balagtey, were enthusiastically introduced to the audience whom have shared their knowledge and experience in the field of research.

Participating universities included Kalinga State University (KSU), Easter College Inc., and Cordillera Career Development College (CCDC), alongside the host institutions UB and BCU.

The colloquium served as a platform for students to showcase their research in diverse disciplines. Each discipline was divided into clusters. Cluster 1 Business Administration & Accountancy, International Hospitality and Tourism, and Criminology.  Cluster 2 Engineering and Architecture, Information Technology and Applied Technology. Cluster 3 – Dental Medicine, Natural Sciences and Health (Nursing). Cluster 4 Communication Arts, Liberal Arts, Psychology, Social Sciences, and  Basic Education. Cluster 5- Graduate School.

The winners were celebrated and recognized as such the following are the champions for each aspect: 

Cluster 1:

  • Best Paper: Tourists’ Waste Reduction Behaviours in Tourist Attractions of Baguio City.
  • Best Oral Presentation: Christian Jay-vi Acuna

Cluster 2:

  • Best Paper: A Proposed Marine Research Center for United Nations Decade of Ocean Science in Balanga, Bataan
  • Best Oral Presentation: James Kelly Postanes

Cluster 3

  • Best Paper:  Till Death Do Us Part: Exploring Lived Experiences of Widowed Elderly in Irisan, Baguio City.
  • Best Oral Presentation: Chadray D. Guisa-ed

Cluster 4

  • Best Paper: Kababae Mong Tao!: Filipino Women’s Journey to Self-Expression and Societal Perception Through Body Art
  • Best Oral Presentation: Kristine Gabrielle F. Banggawan for the research paper S.P.E.A.K.: Exploring SelfRegulated Learning Strategies for Accelerating Foreign Language Learning among College Students

Cluster 5

  • Best Paper: Designing a NarrativeBased Social Inquiry Model for Teaching Araling Panlipunan
  • Best Oral Presentation: Faizal T. Gubia-an for the paper Site Suitability Analysis of Small WAter Impounding Project in Mountain Province: A GIC-Based WAter Resources Assessment

Best Poster: AntiInflammatory Potential of Ethanolic Extract of Green Chinese CAbbage (Brassica rapa) Through Chorioallantoic Membrane Assay

Throughout the one-day event, students presented their research findings before a panel of evaluators composed of faculty researchers and field experts. The sessions highlighted the growing commitment of Cordillera institutions to advancing regional and national development through research-based initiatives.

The University of Baguio’s hosting of the 3rd Regional Student Research Colloquium directly supports inclusive and equitable quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities.  The emphasis on “nurturing a research culture among the youth” contributes to the Quality Education, SDG 4.4; increasing skills for employment, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship and SDG 4.7; ensuring learners acquire knowledge and skills to promote sustainable development.

By promoting research-based initiatives and innovation, the colloquium fosters a culture of scientific inquiry and technological advancement, key aspects of Innovation SDG 9.5; enhance scientific research and upgrade technological capabilities of sectors.

The event’s collaboration between University of Baguio, Baguio Central University, and other Cordillera higher education institutions demonstrates inter-institutional partnerships for shared learning and development — fulfilling SDG 17.17; encouraging effective public, public-private, and civil society partnerships.

The 3rd Regional Student Research Colloquium concluded with an awarding ceremony recognizing outstanding research papers and presenters from participating universities. The event reaffirmed the University of Baguio’s continuing role as a catalyst for academic excellence and inter-institutional partnership in Northern Luzon.
