“strengthening research culture across higher education institutions”
The University of Baguio (UB), through its Research Innovation Extension and Community Outreach (RIECO), hosted the first National Research Colloquium on November 21, 2025, at the UB Centennial Hall. This year’s colloquium focused on the theme “Building Networks for Transformative Graduate and Professional Research,” highlighting the role of interdisciplinary partnerships in strengthening research culture across higher education institutions. The National Colloquium brought different schools together, notably Caraga State University, Benguet State University, San Beda University, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Mid La Union Campus, University of San Agustin, Iloilo City, Panpacific University, and Emilio Aguinaldo College.
The event opened with a heartfelt invocation by KORO STELA, followed by inspiring remarks from University President Dr. Javier Herminio D. Bautista and VP for Academic Affairs Dr. Janice Kaylyn K. Lonogan, setting an enthusiastic tone for the program.
The first plenary speaker, Dr. Supachai Basit, is the Dean of the School of Medical Technology at Emilio Aguinaldo College. He is a distinguished academic and researcher in the field of medical technology and microbiology. He discussed the successes and pitfalls of using Artificial Intelligence in research. His inspiring talk gave hope to the researchers present in the venue.
The second plenary speaker is Dr. Mark Joseph Calano, the Vice President for Research and Innovation at Panpacific University. Dr. Calano discussed strategies for building sustainable research networks across institutions. He highlighted the need for collaborative platforms that bridge academic, industry, and community stakeholders to address national development goals.
The initiative aligned with the university’s goal to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Namely SDG 4: Quality Education by enhancing graduate research capability and strengthening academic networks; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure through discussions promoting research-driven innovation and institutional partnerships. And finally, SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as demonstrated by inter-institutional collaboration and shared research platforms.
The full-day program brought together graduate students, faculty researchers, and professionals from various institutions to share insights, explore collaborative opportunities, and present emerging research trends. The event featured notable guest speakers recognized in their respective fields.
The colloquium also opened avenues for participants to engage in discussions on strengthening research ethics, enhancing dissemination practices, and promoting interdisciplinary partnerships. Scholars Connect 2025 concluded with UB reaffirming its commitment to advancing research excellence and fostering a collaborative academic environment for both emerging and established researchers nationwide.
