Improving the academic performanceof grade 9 learners in mathematics through Arts in Math (AIM) strategy

ABSTRACT

The Sulong EduKalidad Program of the Department of Education moves to innovate Philippine Education in response to the challenges brought about by the ever-changing educational landscape. One of the four pillars of the reform focuses on the upskilling and reskilling of teachers at the basic education level, which puts a premium on addressing the changes to the ways learners are taught. This includes discovering appropriate and relevant teaching methodologies and instruction vis-a-vis implementing intervention activities to promote student achievement. Hence, this action research investigated the effect of the Arts in Math (AIM) program as an intervention strategy in improving the academic performance of Grade 9 students in Mathematics. This study employed a quantitative descriptive-comparative research design and utilized a test questionnaire to identify the level of performance of the students before and after the implementation of the program. In addition, a paired sample t-test at 0.05 level of significance was also employed to compare the mean scores of the students and determine if there is a significant difference in their pre-test and post-test scores before and after the treatment. This study revealed a notable increase in the mean percentage score of the students in their post-test after the implementation of the Arts in Math (AIM) strategy in the classroom. This outcome indicates the effectiveness of Arts in Math (AIM) as an intervention strategy in promoting student achievement. In this regard, the use of different art-related activities and arts-based instruction in teaching mathematics should be reemphasized and considered to improve students’ academic performance in the discipline.
