ABSTRACT

Local Area Network (LAN) is an interconnection of devices located in a single limited area such as a building, office, or home. LANs are used to facilitate sharing of resources such as internet connection, files, and devices. The study’s primary objective is to design and implement a LAN for Alejo M. Pacalso Memorial National High School (AMPMNHS), located in Tuding, Itogon, Benguet. The old network of AMPMNHS was decentralized and not fully utilized, and it was used merely for internet access. It was not appropriately designed and constructed, which resulted in network problems and issues. The methodology used to design and construct the new network of AMPMNHS was Cisco’s Prepare, Plan, Design, Implement, Operate, and Optimize (PPDIOO) Lifecycle Approach to Network Design. Cisco Hierarchical Network Design Model was used in designing the network. A typical enterprise hierarchical network design includes three layers (Access Layer, Distribution Layer, and Core Layer), but in the network of AMPMNHS, a two-tier hierarchical design, where the core and distribution layers are collapsed into a single layer, was used because the network is small and is not expected to expand considerably over time. This reduced network cost while maintaining most of the benefits of the three-tier hierarchical model. Star topology, specifically extended star, was applied in the design of the network. The network was built using old and new devices. It was tested manually and using a network monitoring tool. Testing showed that the following target attributes and capabilities of the network had been achieved: secure, private and wired/wireless network, scalable, 100% available during business hours, with a response time of 1/10 th of a second or less within the intranet, allows accurate sharing of data and resources, can be managed by personnel with no in-depth training on computer networking and cost-effective.
