"to build meaningful bridges between education and the community, making a difference by translating values into action one effort at a time"
In its steadfast commitment to health and well-being and community development, the University of Baguio, through its Research Innovation Extension and Community Outreach (RIECO) Office and Community Outreach and Extension (COE) Coordinators, a Health & Wellness and Legal Consultation activity was conducted at the Barangay Hall of Pinsao Proper last June 21, 2025. The outreach drew residents from all age groups, from children to youth, and adults to senior citizens, who were eager to take steps toward better health and legal guidance.
The Health and Wellness Promotion featured a variety of medical and dental services spearheaded by the students and faculty of the School of Nursing (SON), School of Natural Sciences (SNS), and School of Dentistry (SOD). These aimed to make essential services more accessible to the community especially those who are in need. The medical stations offered vital signs assessment, height and weight assessment, complete blood count (CBC), urinalysis, blood typing, postural assessment, medical consultation, and a pharmacy to support the physical health and well-being of the residents. Meanwhile, the dental station also provided free oral health education and consultations to help residents maintain good dental hygiene and prevent oral health issues in the future. But at the heart of it all was the spirit of service. These quality medical and dental services were offered completely free of charge, addressing individual health concerns while strengthening the overall well-being of the community.
Students from the School of Law, guided by their mentoring lawyers, also shined by facilitating a free legal consultation session for residents seeking advice on various legal matters. Residents had the opportunity to consult with future lawyers while also bringing the law closer and more accessible to them. It provided them with a safe and approachable avenue where they can share their legal concerns freely without the common barriers of cost, formality, and fear of judgement. This showed that legal support is not a privilege reserved for a few, but a right that should be accessible to all. Together with the health and wellness services, the legal consultation underscored UB’s holistic approach to community development, supporting both well-being and access to justice.
This outreach activity is a reflection of the University of Baguio’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. By combining academic expertise with community development, the activity was able to create an avenue for experiential learning and collaboration that demonstrated how institutions and communities can work together for sustainable progress. With hearts to serve, the University of Baguio continues to build meaningful bridges between education and the community, making a difference by translating values into action one effort at a time.
