Last August 5, 2016, the team from University of Baguio represented by Dr. Rhoda Galangco, Director, Research and Development Center, Nona Christina Gabriel, Edenveza Catu, Marilou Sannadan -Research Assistants, and Mr. Jan Michael Ostrea-Member, Institutional Ethics Review Committee, attended the Orientation on National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) at Sarmiento Hall, College of Science, University of the Philippines-Baguio.
A total of 45 research personnel and faculty members from Saint Louis University (SLU), University of
Baguio (UB), University of the Cordilleras (UC) , Benguet State University (BSU), University of the Philippines-Cordillera Studies Center, and the Philippine Military Academy; and research offices of DOST-CAR, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) attended the Orientation Seminar on NRCP Membership .
The orientation was done in response to the call of the present administration to hasten the support to the regions in terms of capacitating its experts and researchers towards research excellence. In order to ensure that support is effectively distributed, the NRCP reached out to different regions and conducted the orientation on NRCP and on how to become a member.
The first speaker of the orientation was Dr. Arnel A. Salvador, an expert in semiconductor physics, nanotechnology and plasma engineering. He is the Associate Director for the Research Extension at the Institute of Physics at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He shared an inspirational talk about his personal account on how to become an expert in the field of research and the privileges on how to become one of the pools of successful Physics scholar in the country. He also specified the importance of mentoring the researchers.
The second speaker was Ms. Renia C. Corocoto,Chief of Research Development and Monitoring Division of NRCP. She gave an overview of the NRCP’s program and the process needed on how to become a member. She also stressed that the NRCP is the biggest network that can tap all the funding agencies of DOST. She also presented the benefits that may be enjoyed by an NRCP member such as the research grants for basic researches which would, later on, be a useful gathered data or tool for a needed practical applications, bigger technology, and research-based outreaches.
Finally, an open-forum was conducted to answer queries about the membership and research grants being offered by NRCP.
NRCP was created on December 8, 1933, through the Act 4120. It is a collegial body of highly trained scientists and researchers cohesively addressing the growing demand for knowledge, skills, and innovations and sharing expertise with all sectors of society.
