Biota-Philippines – 46th National Convention

The BIOTA-PHILIPPINES (Biology Teachers Association) had its 46th National Convention on April 7-9, 2011 at the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. The objectives of the said convention were to

a) provide opportunities for biology educators, teachers and researchers to identify relevant and effective content and teaching strategies that reflect current trends in the biology teaching-learning and research processes;

b) identify effective ways by which contemporary teaching approaches and practical research methods can be integrated into the Biology course at the different educational levels,

c)stress the responsibility of biology teachers and researchers in promoting interest, understanding, and appreciation of the biological sciences ; and d) provide a venue for teachers to share experiences and to enhance their knowledge on research works, teaching innovations, and other creative activities that may help improve and promote Biology education in the country.

The BIOTA-CAR_PHILIPPINES members of the University of Baguio made this an avenue to present a poster on their research entitled, “INFLORESCENCE DIVERSITY OF PARKS IN BAGUIO CITY” . The researchers of the said paper are: Erlina de Peralta, Benilda Narcelles, Cheryl Langit and Dahlia Soriano.Two of the researchers Dr. Soriano and Dr. Narcelles were able to present their paper during the convention. Aside from the poster  and oral presentations the convention provided an opportunity to explain to the teachers the K+12 curriculum and the UBD approach in the basic education. Workshops during the convention presented new ways for presenting lessons in BIOLOGY. The three day activity ended with a field trip to the HUMAN WORKS, a museum of actual human specimens at Taguig, Rizal. The year was also an election year for the organization and Dr. Narcelles was elected as a BOARD MEMBER for BIOTA-PHILIPPINES.

The Biology teachers of the University of Baguio proved that they are at par with other Universities in doing research and they look forward to other avenues to present other researches in the future. | By: Dr. Benilda Z. Narcelles, School of Natural Sciences
