The UB Trail Run 2026, held on March 28 at the scenic trails of Camp John Hay, stood out not only as a celebration of athleticism and community but also as a meaningful stride toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With the theme “Stride for Sustainability: Running Toward Greener Futures”, the University of Baguio showed how a local initiative can make a global impact. The run promoted SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by encouraging participants to embrace active lifestyles and wellness. The event highlighted the importance of physical activity in maintaining overall health, reducing stress, and fostering resilience. At the same time, its fundraising efforts supported SDG 4 (Quality Education), channeling resources to partner schools and strengthening opportunities for both the teachers and the learners. Furthermore, through its flagship initiative, PROJECT GROOM ME, the University advanced SDG 13 (Climate Action) by committing to greening projects, and environmental preservation and advocacies. Most importantly, the event highlighted the power of collaboration, as sponsors, volunteers, and local organizations came together in the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) demonstrating that collective action is essential for building sustainable futures.
Against this backdrop of advocacy and purpose, the trail run drew an impressive turnout across its three categories. The 3KM race welcomed 223 participants, including the youngest runner, a spirited 6-year-old, whose presence symbolized the next generation’s role in sustainability. The 5KM category fascinated 228 runners, a diverse mix of students, professionals, UB Alumni, and fitness enthusiasts eager to embrace the challenge within the blue trail. Meanwhile, the 7KM category tested the endurance of 105 seasoned runners, highlighted by the oldest participant, a remarkable 70-year-old, whose determination embodied resilience and lifelong commitment to health and environmental advocacy. These numbers were more than statistics; they told a story of unity across ages and abilities. Every stride taken, from the youngest child to the most experienced elder, represented not only personal endurance but also a shared pledge to support education, advance sustainability, and preserve Mother Earth.
The event was supported by a strong volunteer force composed of students, teachers, and staff from various departments of the University, including 4 faculty members from the School of Engineering and Architecture, 1 from School of Natural Sciences, 9 teachers from UB High School, 3 teachers from Laboratory Elementary School, 12 students and faculties from School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management, 1 from CPDO, 2 from MIS, and 5 from the School of Dentistry. To further strengthen the operations, the event was backed by 25 student marshals who managed the race routes and crowd flow, and served as sweepers to monitor all participants along the trail, and 16 medics from the School of Nursing who provided immediate medical assistance whenever needed. Their dedication ensured the smooth flow of the race and the safety of participants. Reinforcing this commitment, the John Hay Management Corporation (JHMC) deployed additional medics and security personnel, underscoring the collaborative spirit between the University and local institutions.
The program for the UB Trail Run 2026 unfolded with precision and energy, beginning with early registration at 4:30 AM, where participants eagerly gathered and prepare for the day’s challenge. The formal opening was marked by welcome remarks from Dr. Janice Kaylyn K. Lonogan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who underscored the University’s vision of weaving sustainability into education and community engagement. Her message set the tone for the event, reminding everyone that the run was not only about physical endurance but also about advancing environmental responsibility and educational support. Following this, Dr. Donnavila Marie Panday-Herbster, Director of RIECO, provided a comprehensive overview of the activity, highlighting its dual purpose of fundraising for partner schools and supporting the University’s greening initiatives under PROJECT GROOM ME. The races commenced in staggered intervals, beginning with the 3KM gunstart at 6:00 AM, followed by the 5KM at 6:30 AM, and finally the 7KM at 7:00 AM, allowing runners to fully experience the scenic yet challenging terrain of Camp John Hay. The trails, surrounded by pine trees and fresh mountain air, offered both beauty and difficulty, making the run a memorable test of endurance and determination. The program concluded with the acknowledgment of finishers, distribution of medals, and closing remarks from Dr. Medardo Abarientos, Director of the Admission and Records Center, leaving participants inspired and motivated to continue striving for greener futures.
