ABSTRACT

Limited awareness has contributed adversely to the increase in dengue incidence in Balili, La Trinidad Benguet. The public has a huge role to contribute to the prevention and control of the outbreak disease. The current study was conducted to measure the existing level of awareness of dengue infection among the Balili, La Trinidad residences and to assess the effectiveness of dengue awareness programs to improve the existing knowledge and preventive practices on dengue. A total of 302 households (20 years old and above) was given questionnaire as a respondent. They used the Cochran Formula for calculating a sample. A questionnaire checklist was used as the data gathering tool that was formulated based on the literature they gathered. Most of the respondents were characterized by “totally aware” and “moderately aware” prior to the awareness program. Even though, existing knowledge of the residents of Balili, La Trinidad Benguet about dengue ranged between “totally aware” and “moderately aware” categories, awareness of “symptoms & patient care” and “causes of dengue outbreak” were limited. We recommend implementing seminars, health programs and health teachings to raise the awareness and to translate knowledge into sound practice to control dengue disease epidemics in these areas, therefore prevention is better than cure.
