ABSTRACT

In the stride for the LGBTQ+ acceptance in society, it remains a challenge for people having difficulty supporting or understanding the LGBTQ+ community. In terms of the youth coming out and expressing their real identity and relationships, acceptance remains challenging because of its unorthodox nature. Supporting research states that the youth is having a split decision of staying true in their authenticity in manifesting traits brought by the external nature or they will stay conforming to the expectation or standards of the society. This study takes a step forward for the parents, students, and people in society to understand and get an in-depth analysis of the Rainbow community and how people can come up with a mutual understanding in terms of accepting the society as mentioned above. Using quantitative descriptive research design and descriptive statistics to analyze the data, we gathered thirty (30) G12 LGBTQ+ students in the University of Baguio High School in terms of their perception on parenting styles towards them when coming out, engaging in queer relationship and when experiencing harassment and traumatic scenarios. It found that parents consider their child as a blessing but does not support when expressing their real identity, parents do not portray emotional support to their children when engaging in a queer relationship but worry in terms of safety or when experiencing harassment and traumatic scenarios. Guidance from professionals with regards to the ideal familial and parenting styles that can strengthen the relationships of the students and their parents is suggested as part of the intervention.
