The Faculty Research Colloquium on November 12, 2016, at the RCB Dome provided an occasion for the university faculty members to broadcast findings of their studies. Graduate student, guests from the research partner schools who came from Baguio Central University, King’s College of the Philippines, Easter College, and Cordillera Career were among the attendees during the event.
Dr. Jun C. Corpuz, a faculty member of the School of Allied Medical Sciences and the Chairman of Institutional Ethics Review Committee of the University gave the welcome remarks.
The first presenter, Dr. Aida A. Dapiawen, Dean of School of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences discussed the “English
vocabulary learning among the School of International Hospitality and Touri
sm Management students.” Dr. Dapiawen’s research also won the “Best Research for 2016”. The findings reveal that the students rarely use the vocabulary learning techniques, but they strongly agree on the perceived benefits of an enhanced vocabulary. Dr. Perfecto M. Lopez, Vice-President for Administration of Baguio Central University, gave his reaction.
The second presenters, Dr. Kareen B Leon and Mr. Rhad Vic Estoque came from the School of Business Administration and Accountancy. Their study was on the “Perceptions of the School of Business Administration and Accountancy Students on the Department Examination.” Their research was done to determine how the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy students perceived their departmental examinations. The respondents were third to fifth year accounting students. According to the study, there was a significant difference in the perceptions of the respondents per year level. Dr. Marilyn Wacnag of Cordillera Career Development Center gave her reaction to the research paper.
The third presenter, Dr. Rhoda Basco-Galangco of the Research and Development Center talked about her study on “Teacher Evaluation Practices of Evaluators in the University of Bag
uio.” The results are used more for determining the load of the teachers and for re-hiring them. No increase in salary accompanies a good evaluation result. It is recommended that the HRMC conduct training for evaluators and craft strong policies for the utilization of the evaluation results. Dr. Faith G. Micael of Kings College of the Philippines gave her reaction after the presentation of Dr. Galangco.
The fourth presenter, Dr. Shirley Baterina-Landingin is a faculty member of the
School of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. She shared her dissertation on “Reflective Teaching Practice of Tertiary English Teachers in Selected Universities in Baguio City.” The research aimed at determining the landscape of Reflective Teaching Practice (RTP)among tertiary ESL teacher. The findings showed that while RTP is already in place, it is not being observed purposively and systematically. The researcher came up with a primer entitled HEART (stands for Help Enhance and Activate Reflective Teaching) as an output of the study which is designed as a reference text to guide teachers as to effective reflective methods, as well as school administrators who may want to integrate RTP in the faculty development programs. Ms. Beverly Baguiling of Easter College gave her remarks to the report.
The last presenter, Dr. Marivic Mutong shared her research on “An Exploratory Study on the Interventions and Effect of Student Consultation in the School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management”. The research is a collaborative research with Ms. Jenelyn M. Magpatoc, a faculty member of SIHTM. According to the researchers, the effects were determined through the improvements on the students observed by the teachers after the consultation. Most likely, the interventions given by the teachers helped the students improved their performance in school and their behaviors, and that consultation proved to help students. Dr. Dyesebel L. Chinayo of School of Allied Medical Sciences gave her response after the presentation of Dr. Mutong.
Dr. Aida A. Dapiawen gave the closing remarks to formally close the 2016 Faculty Research Colloquium.
