University of Baguio Champions Zero-Plastic Campus

“ensures that sustainability becomes a shared and enduring responsibility”

The University of Baguio remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing sustainable development, particularly through SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Guided by this goal, UB continues to strengthen its Waste Management Policy–an institutional initiative that calls on top management, employees, faculty members, students, parents, and stakeholders to consciously evaluate the waste they generate and take active steps to reduce it. This includes minimizing the use of non-recyclable materials and replacing disposable items with reusable options. By embedding these principles into daily campus operations, the University ensures that sustainability becomes a shared and enduring responsibility.

This commitment is most evident in UB’s strong push to eliminate single-use plastics, especially disposable cups. Recognizing that meaningful change begins with everyday habits, the University has transitioned to the use of reusable cups across campus events, offices, and student activities. Rather than relying on throwaway items, UB champions durable and washable cups that significantly reduce plastic waste. To reinforce this shift, the University also provided UB-branded tumblers and washable plastic cups to its stakeholders to encourage everyone to observe zero waste in their daily routines. These efforts, supported by accessible refilling stations and well-maintained waste segregation areas, create a campus environment where sustainability is both convenient and visible.

UB’s distribution of tumblers and its shift to washable, reusable cups stand as concrete demonstrations of its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It was given to the officials and functionaries of Barangay Pinsao Proper, teachers from the Lindwan Elementary School and Lindawan National High School, and the members of the Visually Impaired Positive and Progressive Dreamers. These initiatives are integral to UB’s waste management campaign and supports sustainable catering, putting into practice the University’s advocacy for a campus where sustainability is a way of life.

Together, these initiatives reflect UB’s strong resolve to embed sustainability into its everyday operations and campus culture. A culture where waste generation is drastically reduced, eco-friendly practices are second nature, and every member actively contributes to a cleaner and greener campus. Looking ahead, UB aims to nurture an environment in which sustainable choices are not merely encouraged but indistinctively embraced.
