ABSTRACT

Mathematics plays an integral role in people’s lives. Considering this alongside other factors, some may experience having Math Anxiety which is described as the feeling of uneasiness and discomfort when faced with Math-related problems. With this in mind, the study aims to examine the perceived level of Math Anxiety among senior high school students, specifically Grade 11 students of the University of Baguio Science High School. Another objective was to determine the significant relationship between the perceived level of Math Anxiety among the said population of the locale, as mentioned earlier, to strand and student enrollment type. The study found that out of 73 responses, the majority being 53.42% of the respondents are experiencing a moderate- severe level of the referred phenomenon, considerably high following the Beck Anxiety Inventory, which the researchers used the 4-point Likert scale adapted from Beck Anxiety Inventory’s Scoring. It was also found that the perceived level of Math Anxiety is not affected by the strand chosen by the respondents and whether or not they are classified as new or old students. The researchers collected data through Google Forms in around two weeks. There should be many factors being considered under the scope of Math Anxiety as each one’s experience differs from another person’s. The researchers recommend focusing on factors such as exposure at a younger age to complex Math- related problems. The results conducted by the study may be used to understand why students are not simply disliking Mathematics and to encourage future studies for the improvement of learning.
