Research Incentives



Internal Funding

The UB R&DC provides research and thesis/dissertation grants to faculty members and employees of the University, to augment their expenses in their researches.  The financial assistance offered by the R&DC are the honorarium for research, Thesis/Dissertation Grant and the Institutional Research Travel Grant.

Honorarium.  This grant is offered to all employees who conduct researches aligned to the University Research Agenda. The honorarium varies according to the type of research project. Effective 1st Semester of School Year 2019-2020, the scheme is as follows: 

  • Commissioned Research Projects  –  P20,000.00 
  • Departmental Researches               –  P25,000.00 + 5,000.00
  • Institutional Researches                 –  P40,000.00 - P90,000.00 + 5,000.00
  • Community Researches                  –  P40,000.00 - P90,000.00 + 5,000.00
  • Special Projects/Researches          –  P40,000.00 - P90,000.00 + 5,000.00

Commissioned Research Projects. These are projects or researches recommended by the Office of the President, Office of the Vice President for Administration, Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Office of the Vice President for Finance. These are channeled through the Research and Development Center which undertakes the task of doing the project on their own personal time. The R&DC personnel or URB member who gets the project chooses his/her members, if needed, according to the requirements of the project. Alternatively, if the R&DC personnel does not have the necessary qualifications to do the project, qualified faculty members shall be tapped to do the research.
Departmental Researches. These are researches aligned to the university research agenda which addresses the needs or concerns of the school/office, program, discipline or subject area.  These include action researches of faculty members.
Institutional Researches. These are researches aligned to the priority areas of the university and are university-wide in scope. They address the needs of the administration and the management  in a) policy making and implementation, b) program planning, designing, assessing, implementing and  evaluating, c) advertising, recruiting and marketing strategies and d) complying with requirements of  accrediting and assessing bodies.
Community Researches. These are researches that provide an intersection to academic functions and community service thus providing an avenue for the university to exercise its social  responsibility. They address the needs of the community while responding to the research, outreach  and instruction functions of the university.
Special Projects/Researches. These are institutional or community researches that need funding more than the fixed professional fees. A budget hearing is necessary prior to approval of  proposed budget. Budget is sealed at P60, 000.00 (except for scientific researches leading to  inventions, software, chemical formulations or other products) inclusive of the honorarium. Individual  researchers are disqualified from applying. Projects/Research outputs are subject to university  policies considering Intellectual property Rights.
The researcher is allowed to conduct more than one research within a semester or school year, provided such researches are endorsed by the Dean/Principal/Head of Office. The entitled honorarium shall be given to the proponent after accomplishing the following:

  • Submission of the final copy of the research study to the R&DC;
  • Presentation of research output in a public lecture and/or in a poster presentation; and,
  • Completion and submission of the Release of Research Fund (RRF) form to the R&DC

Researchers who meet the following are eligible for the research honorarium:

  • A faculty member and/or an employee of the University of Baguio
  • The topic is aligned to the  research priority areas in the University Research Agenda
  • The research is included in the official roster of the R&DC

Thesis/Dissertation Grant.  The University extends financial assistance to its faculty and employees in the conduct of their thesis/dissertation.  UB extends to the grantee a maximum of P20, 000 in a master’s and doctoral program. After completion of the program, the grantee who studied in another institution and was given the full amount of P20, 000 must render two years of service, while the grantee given only P10, 000 must render one year of service to the university.  Grantees who studied in UB must render two years of service for those who availed of the P20, 000 and one year service for those who availed of the P10, 000 apart from the policies set by the University on return service for their scholarships.  Grantees who fail to comply with this condition shall refund to UB the entire amount given them.

  • Accomplished application form
  • Letter of recommendation from Dean/Immediate Head
  • Endorsement from the Graduate School Dean
  • Photocopy of the Enrolment/Registration Form (Thesis/Dissertation II)
  • Certificate of passing the Comprehensive Examination/Public Lecture)
  • Ethics Clearance
  • Informed Consent 

Institutional Research Travel Grant.  Faculty, employees and students are given the opportunity to present the results of their research in any reputable scientific meetings throughout the country. Faculty/Employee researches, however, must have undergone review by the URB. Papers arising from dissertation/thesis findings or personal researches that did not undergo the process of review by the URB are not eligible to this grant. The study of student researchers seeking such grant must be aligned to the research priority areas of the university and must have been endorsed by the Dean or Principal. Priority is given to researchers whose papers will be published in a peer reviewed and indexed journal.

External Funding The R&DC has established linkages with private and government institutions that offer research grants and financial assistance to qualified faculty, employees and students.

  1. Cordillera Industry and Energy Research and Development Consortium (CIERDEC).  This is a tripartite organization of the academe, government and business sectors.  UB and other member agencies are committed to build and strengthen their Research and Development (R&D) capabilities for the benefit of industrial growth.
  2. Commission on Higher Education (CHED).  CHED promotes, encourages and supports research activities in Philippine higher education institutions.  Hence, it offers various funding schemes to members of the academe for their research undertakings.
  3. The Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium (CRHRDC). This is a multi-sectorial organization of the academe, government planning bodies, hospital institutions, and private sectors which functions as the regional partner agency of the PCHRD, which serves as a clearing house for all health - related researches.


Apart from the research grants, the R&DC also offers incentives to researchers in the form of research load, Best Research award and Hall of Fame –Research award.  

Research Load. This is an incentive for full-time faculty members only. It is not counted as part of their instruction load. If the researcher/s opt/s to avail of a research load, they may request it subject to the approval of their respective Deans who will decide en masse (for collaborative group researches). Only those with proposals finally approved by the VP for Academic Affairs may qualify for a research load to commence at the beginning of the term when data gathering begins. For individual researchers doing departmental and institutional researches, the research load may range from 3 to 6 units. On top of the compensation for the research load is an honorarium based from the type of research project. For institutional and community group researches, the research load is the same but divided among themselves. Since the research load is part of their total load, they will be monitored by the R&DC staff. The time will not be spent in the faculty room, but in the library, the research writing laboratory or in the field. At the end of the semester, they will seek clearance from the R&DC Director. An extension of one month to submit the final output is granted, otherwise, the researchers must reimburse the monetary equivalent of the research load but is still entitled to the honorarium.

Best Research (Professional). The R&DC recognizes outstanding professional researchers in the University by giving a Best Research Award. These awardees shall be honored during the celebration of the University’s Foundation Day every after two (2) years. Winners in the search for Best Research shall receive the following: 

  1. Php 10,000.00 Best Research   –  1st Place 
  2. Php 7,500.00 Best Research     –  2nd Place 
  3. Php 5,000.00 Best Research     –  3rd Place

Plaques of recognition shall also be given to the recipients of the Best Research Award.  Awarding of all cash prizes shall be done on the FAMERS during the Foundation Day Celebration.

Hall of Fame in Research. This is bestowed upon researchers who have been awarded Best Research (1st, 2nd or 3rd) for three consecutive times after the last awarding of the Hall of Fame. A cash of P10, 000.00 and a plaque are awarded during the FAMERS celebration.

Best Student Health Research. The University of Baguio recognizes the outstanding researches conducted by students in the Allied Medical Sciences. The search is open every first semester of the School Year and culminates with the awarding ceremonies before the end of the semester.

Incentive for Research Anchorpersons. The compensation of research anchorpersons follows an output-based scheme. The following are considered in the computation of the compensation:

  1. Review of capsule research proposal
  2. Review of full research proposal
  3. Review of output and approval for its publication
  4. Performance evaluation
  5. Submission of accomplishment reports

A RAP who meets the following shall be awarded Outstanding Research Anchorperson during the FAMERS:

  1. Completion and publication of 1 research in the UB Research Journal in the current school year OR publication of 1 research in an external refereed journal
  2. School has produced a minimum of four researches (including his/her own research) covering 2 semesters.
  3. Obtained a rating of at least 3.00 in the performance evaluation.

Incentive for University Research Board. The University Research Board members are entitled to receive honorarium at the end of each semester. The computation is based on the evaluation of each member’s performance by the R&DC vis-à-vis a preset honorarium scheme. The following are considered in the computation of the compensation:

  1. Research Proposal Evaluation
  2. Final Research Output Evaluation
  3. Best Research Award Screening
  4. Research Output
  5. Evaluation of materials needed by the R&DC.

Members of the University Research Board who published researches in a refereed or indexed national and international journal shall be entitled to an incentive approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Finance.

Other Benefits. The relevant researches of employees and students shall be published in the University Research Journal and the Undergraduate Multidisciplinary Research Journal. Moreover, abstracts of these researches shall be posted in the R&DC website to be accessible to people anywhere in the world.
