Abstract

The threefold functions of a teacher in a higher institution includes instruction, research, and extension. Expectedly, all 3 functions must be performed; however, research is taking the backseat, unlike instruction, which is in the limelight among the functions. This research was conceptualized with the objective of looking into the contributory factors to the low research productivity in the University of Baguio. This study looked into the capability of the teachers in accomplishing the different research activities, their knowledge of the existing resources that help build their capability, and their research undertaking that contributed to their research capability. This descriptive research utilized a 4-point Likert-type scale questionnaire to gather the data on the teachers’ research capability and a survey of their knowledge on the existing resources supportive of building their research capacity. The study involved all the 66 full-time college teachers during the Academic Year 2015-2016. The teachers are “adequately capable” of accomplishing different research activities, such as constructing the research design and methodology and obtaining the lowest average values. They are adequately capable of handling activities that require statistical knowledge and relate to instrumentation. The responses to the survey questions indicate that the teachers are not familiar with all the existing resources that help build their research capability and that the type of research they are more familiar with is quantitative-descriptive. Very few teachers engaged in research beyond those completed as part of their degree requirement.
