2017 marked the 4th year for Best Student Health Research of the University. The competition for best student health research was divided into two categories: Health Social Science and Health Development Research. All health researches have done from the preceding year from the School of Natural Sciences (SNS), School of Nursing (SON) and School of Dentistry (SOD) are eligible to join the competition.
The Search for Best Student Health Research was slated on November 13-14, 2017. Four types of research qualify for each category after the elimination round.
Researches from SOD entitled The potential of Carica Papaya pulp as a topical treatment for mild to moderate plaque-induced gingivitis in adults, The healing effects of Euphorbia Hirta (tawa-tawa) on gingivitis, and Effectiveness of Purple sweet potato anthocyanin extract as saliva pH indicator, and one research from SNS entitled On the effectiveness of honey (Tetragonula biroi) and oregano extracts (Plectranthus amboilicus) against Staphylococcus and S epidermis qualified for the Health Development Research Category.
The studies of students from SNS which passed for the Health Social Science Research are Towards a
postural program for intermediate grades of University of Baguio Laboratory Elementary School, and Towards a postural wellness for the academic support group of the University of Baguio. Two studies from SOD entitled Clinical anxiety among dental students of the University of Baguio and Perceived effects of E-cigarette vaping to the oral cavity likewise qualified for the category.
The eight groups for the final round of selection of Best Student Health Research had the oral presentation on November 13, 2017, at the AMS Hall. The students had 30-minute paper presentation per group. The expert judges for the oral presentation were Mr. Maverick Tamayo faculty member from Senior High School, Ms. Thea Suaco Science teacher from UB Science High, and Dr. Gaudelia Reyes from Saint Louis University.
Studies that qualify for the oral presentation were showcased in a poster exhibit at the Main Library on November 14, 2017.
AWARDING CEREMONIES
The winners of the Search for Best Student Health Research were awarded on November 24, 2017, at the AMS Hall. Present during the awarding ceremonies were Dr. Demetrio Daet, Dean of School of Dentistry, research students from SOD and SNS, and their research advisers. Dr. Rhoda Basco-Galangco, RDC Director and Dr. Esmeralda M. Gatchallan, VP for Institutional and External Affairs handed the certificates and cash award for the winners.
The first place winners for each category received Php 5,000.00 while the second place winners got Php 3,000.00. The following were the winners:

- Second Place: “The healing effects of Euphorbia Hirta (tawa-tawa) on gingivitis” by Zerline Mae Bernabe Cachero, Dranren Pascua Carbonell, Rod-prudence Celestino Peralta ,Dayanara Balcita Torres & Hillary Mary Somera Valdez.Their adviser was Dr. Joseph M. Acosta

- First Place : “Towards a postural program for intermediate grades of University of Baguio Laboratory Elementary School” by Jayson Calixto Bernardo, Jerome Javier Diaz, Matthew Adaoag Ramos, Jeffrey Aniag Salonga, Julie Anne Ecuan Tiburcio, Lorena Marie Lim Xu. Their adviser was Ms. Ruth D. Fernandez
- Second Place : “Clinical anxiety among dental students of the University of Baguio” by Abeh Brent

The Search for Best Student Health Research is an annual event facilitated by the RDC. The entries for 2017 will be included in the Catalyst, UB Undergraduate Multidisciplinary Research Journal.
