UB student researchers took part in the Regional Invention Contest Exhibits (RICE) organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) with the theme “Invention and Innovation for the People.” The chosen researches were exhibited at the Baguio Convention Center from November 6 -8, 2017. The competition was divided into two categories: the Adult Creative Research (Likha Award) and Student Creative Research (Sibol Award) for High School and College. This year’s theme geared on “Invention and Innovation for the People.” Entries from UB varied from student projects, invention, and other products both beneficial to a specific industry, household maintenance, road safety and to the environment.
The students explained their research poster with detailed specifications of their project or inventions.
The high school students from UB Science High School made a video clip of their invention Pattern Activated Door Lock Using Knocks (P.A.D.L.U.K). The researchers are Anne Drew Bautista, Patricia Nicole L. Choy, Joshua Ben H. Galaboc while Engr. Annalyn D. Soria and Mr. Maverick Tamayo stood as their adviser. High school advisees of Ms. Daphe Dogcio exhibited their science projects “The effectiveness of cow bones as the source of collagen for healthy hair” and “A comparative study of Pandan leaves and Rosemary as fruit and vegetable preservatives.” The researchers are Janyka De Jesus, Rye Pamo, Joshua Lopez and Myke Aaron O. Capsuyen, Ginarose A. Peckley, Aurora G. Luzano for the latter.
There were six entries from the college department of the universities. The college entries from the 
School of Engineering brought with them their invention for their research projects “Windmill as an Alternative Power Source: A Reinvention” and “Robotic Bartending Machine.” The researchers for the two projects are Jan Adrian Cabbigat, Melva Cawid, Grace Labasen, John Carlo Galapon, and Dave Jon Pitok. Their adviser is Engr. Romulos Amistad.
There were other two entries from the engineering department; however, due to time constraint, they were not able to present their research during the actual event.
The School of Dentistry has two entries.The first group who presented their research “ Effectiveness of
Purple Sweet Potato Anthocyanin Extract as Saliva pH Indicator” brought with them the processed sweet potato strips for onsite testing of pH for saliva. The second group made a sampler out of papaya for their research “The potential of Carica Papaya pulp as a topical treatment for mild to moderate plaque-induced gingivitis in adults.” Both of the groups decorated their booths with essential details of their research. The first group of dentistry researchers are Frenie May T. Butic, Shevanne C.Cabaling, Ellen Seal D. Guinolbay , Ashley Marie E. Kato & Godly Mae B. Malagayo. Dr. Belen W. Nievera is their research adviser.The second group of dentistry researchers are Donnalyne Sumibcay Barrientos, Charlene Maliones Bilog, Menchie Amor Arciaga Dangla, Eunice Mariano Datayan, Jesher Nonales Nicolas & Danielle Anne Romero Yu.
