ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the mathematics performance of the University of Baguio Science High School students in the National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) for SY 2008-2009 in relation to their academic performance in mathematics from their first year through the ex-post-facto method. The study found out that the level of performance of the students in the NCAE is above average evidenced by their average of 85. This implies that the students performed well in the said examination. The level of academic performance of the students in mathematics from first year to fourth year is satisfactory with an average of 89. This implies that the respondents still experienced some difficulty in mathematics. The degree of correlation between the level of performance in the NCAE and the academic performance in mathematics for the past four years is 0.702 interpreted as significant correlation. The significant correlation means that an improvement in the level of academic performance in mathematics will also mean a significant increase in the level of performance in the NCAE of the students. The researchers recommended that the University of Baguio Science High School students should strengthen their skills in mathematics from first year to fourth year. An action research on the identification of the difficulties encountered by the students in mathematics and the effective teaching strategies which will enhance the level of performance of the students in mathematics subjects should be conducted. The administration of the UB Science High School should maintain the admission/retention policies to maintain the level of performance of the department.
