The Faculty Research Colloquium – Part 1 was held last September 26, 2015 at the Main AVR. The activity provides an avenue for faculty members who availed of the thesis/dissertation grant to disseminate the important findings of their study.
Dr. Dyesebel L. Chinayo, a faculty member of the School of Nursing, found that the high level of awareness, acceptance, and support are the influencing factors in the efficient implementation of the economic provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). She emphasized that leadership and cooperation are crucial to the implementation of the CBA and that an LMC is needed to preserve a collegial and familial atmosphere in the university. Her dissertation is titled “Challenges in the Implementation of Labor Laws and the Collective Bargaining Agreement in Higher Education Institutions in Baguio City.”
According to Mr. Medardo Abarientos, head of the Institutional Documentation Office, the office personnel and the laboratory custodians, generally, have not yet attained and practiced the knowledge required to handle documents properly. However, the respondents’ level of filing knowledge demonstrates that they understood the importance of handling records properly. His thesis is titled “Records Management and Training Needs of Secretaries and Staff in the Different Office of the University of Baguio.”
In “Financial Literacy of the Employees of the University of Baguio” by Mr. Earl John Fianza, a faculty member of the School of Business administration and Accountancy, it was found that most employees have a high level of financial knowledge, behavior and attitude. Employees in the higher age groups are most likely not able to save due to many obligations. The non-teaching staff are also found to have a more positive attitude towards saving compared to the teaching personnel.
Ms. Luvina Basilio, a faculty member of the School of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, disclosed that the perceived responsiveness of the outreach and extension programs of the University of Baguio depends on the nature of the activity. Activities that provide immediate impact are perceived not as effective as those that have long-term benefits. Most of the community respondents also identified donations, medical and dental missions, and tangible projects as responsive. Her study is titled “Corporate Social Responsibility Program of the University of Baguio: The Case of San Luis and Loakan Proper Barangay.”
Ms. Leny Estacio, the Guidance Counselor of the UB Science High School, found that the Grade 8 students experience lack of motivation, general indecisiveness, and dysfunctional beliefs in terms of their readiness to decide on a career. The lack of readiness due to general indecisiveness and dysfunctional beliefs were experienced more frequently than lack of motivation. External conflicts is another factor that affects their career decision-making. Her thesis is titled “Career Decision Making in Adolescents.”
The only Filipino-based thesis presented was by Mr. Elmer Bustamante, a faculty member of the UB High School. His thesis is titled “Pagdalumat sa Paraan ng Pagsasagot sa Tanong Pampanitikan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Sekondarya.” He concludes that there are various ways in which students answer questions in literature “dahil magkakaiba rin ang antas ng mga tanong na nagtatakda ng paraan kung paano dapat sagutin at sa kabilang panig ay lumilikha ng iba pang pagkilos. Ang pagsagot ng mga mag-aaral ay naaapektuhan ng panloob at panlabas na mga salik.”
Now on its second year, the Faculty Research Colloquium is the new face of the public lectures sponsored by the R&DC.
